Formation of traditional values of student youth: sociological analysis

The purpose of this study is to examine the role of traditional spiritual and moral values (patriotism, historical memory, and the unity of the peoples of Russia) in the consciousness of Russian students and to identify areas for their development in modern universities. Traditional values are defined in this study as stable ideas about morality, ethics, family relationships, social roles, and hierarchy that have historically developed in a given culture and are passed down from generation to generation.
Research methods: Sociological research conducted at the Department of Sociology and Social Technologies using an online survey (486 respondents, Orel, February 2025) and in-depth interviews
(12 informants, March 2025).
Research subject: The meaning and role of traditional values in the lives of modern youth, the importance and relevance of such values as patriotism, historical memory, and national unity for young people, and the main directions for strengthening them.
Students identified the following as the main factors uniting Russia's diverse peoples and nationalities: shared history (61%), culture and traditions (57%), and shared values (55.5%).
Study Results: Traditional values remain a significant element in shaping young people's worldviews, and their development at universities requires innovative (modern) approaches. The authors identified the following as the most effective ways to foster traditional values among students: integrating patriotic education into educational programs; using digital resources for studying history; and organizing interethnic projects and cultural exchanges.
Practical Relevance: The study's results can be used to study regional characteristics of value orientations and develop specific methods for strengthening them in the educational environment.
